Flux

Flux arrived on the scene in mid-2024 and quickly established itself as a serious contender in the open-source image generation space. Developed by Black Forest Labs -- a team that includes key researchers behind the original Stable Diffusion -- Flux brings a new architecture based on flow matching transformers that produces notably higher quality images than its predecessors. What sets Flux apart most distinctly is its prompt adherence and text rendering capabilities. Where other models often ignore or misinterpret parts of complex prompts, Flux follows instructions with a precision that was previously only achievable with closed models like Midjourney or DALL-E 3.

The model comes in three variants that serve different use cases. Flux Schnell is fully open source under an Apache 2.0 license and optimized for speed, generating images in as few as one to four diffusion steps. Flux Dev offers higher quality for research and non-commercial use. Flux Pro, available only through the API, represents the highest quality tier with a commercial license. This tiered approach lets casual users and researchers work with genuinely capable open-source models while still giving Black Forest Labs a commercial revenue stream to fund continued development.

The main limitation of Flux relative to Stable Diffusion is ecosystem maturity. Stable Diffusion has years of community development behind it, with thousands of fine-tuned checkpoints, ControlNet models, and established workflows. Flux's community is growing rapidly but has not yet reached that depth. Local deployment also demands substantial GPU resources, particularly for the Dev and Pro-quality outputs. That said, the trajectory is clear -- Flux is producing images that compete with the best closed-source models while remaining open and customizable.
