DeepSeek became a household name in early 2025 when its R1 reasoning model matched top Western models on many benchmarks at a fraction of the reported training cost, and the company released the weights openly. The consumer chat app is free and genuinely capable, especially for math, logic, and programming, where its reasoning mode walks through problems step by step. For many everyday tasks it holds up well against the free tiers of ChatGPT and Claude.

Its biggest draw for developers is price and openness. The API costs a small fraction of what OpenAI or Anthropic charge for comparable models, and it uses an OpenAI-compatible format, so switching an existing app over is often a one-line change. Because the weights are open, you can also run smaller distilled versions locally through Ollama or LM Studio, or host the full models with a cloud provider, which keeps your data entirely on infrastructure you control.

The trade-offs are significant, and they are mostly about trust rather than capability. The hosted chat app and API store data on servers in China, several governments have banned DeepSeek on official devices, and the model avoids or censors politically sensitive topics. It also lacks many of the extras that ChatGPT offers, such as image generation, advanced voice, and a large plugin ecosystem.
