CapCut started as TikTok's companion editor and has grown into one of the most widely used video editors in the world, largely because it gives away features that other tools charge for. Its AI tools are aimed squarely at short-form creators: automatic captions that are accurate and easy to style, background removal that works without a green screen, auto reframing for vertical video, and text-to-speech voices for narration. For someone making Reels, Shorts, or TikToks, it covers most of what a typical edit needs.

The editing experience is fast and approachable. The timeline is simpler than Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve but more capable than most phone apps, and projects sync between the mobile, desktop, and web versions. The template library is a big part of the appeal, since templates track what is trending and let you drop in your own clips in seconds. The trade-off is that CapCut has steadily moved more of its best effects and AI tools into the Pro tier, so the free version is less generous than it was a couple of years ago.

There are two caveats worth knowing. CapCut is owned by ByteDance, and its terms of service grant the company broad rights over content you upload, which matters if you work with client footage or anything confidential. It is also not built for long-form, cinematic, or color-critical work, where Descript or a traditional editor is a better fit. For quick, polished social content, though, CapCut remains the easiest recommendation in AI video editing.
